Bill de Blasio Sure Sounds Like a Communist

Pretty incredible quote here in the New York magazine interview with New York mayor Bill de Blasio. Several people have jokingly called the man a communist, but here he is arguing against private property rights more or less on the basis of "each according to his ability, each according to his needs":

In 2013, you ran on reducing income inequality. Where has it been hardest to make progress? Wages, housing, schools? What’s been hardest is the way our legal system is structured to favor private property. I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be. I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community, that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs. And I would, too. Unfortunately, what stands in the way of that is hundreds of years of history that have elevated property rights and wealth to the point that that’s the reality that calls the tune on a lot of development.

I’ll give you an example. I was down one day on Varick Street, somewhere close to Canal, and there was a big sign out front of a new condo saying, “Units start at $2 million.” And that just drives people stark raving mad in this city, because that kind of development is clearly not for everyday people. It’s almost like it’s being flaunted. Look, if I had my druthers, the city government would determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed. And there would be very stringent requirements around income levels and rents.

Emphasis added. So in addition to complaining about a legal system organized around the concept of private property, de Blasio wants the government to "determine every single plot of land, how development would proceed." That is quite an admission.

Power with Control
:yay:

that was my thought, any number of Eastern Block countries

Their plans for the human ant nest requires antlike behavior from humans. Wonder if Deblasio would set the example by giving up his money except say 20K of it and moving into a 500 square foot (I know, pretty generous) studio apt? You know, "be the change you want to see".

I see he lives in a 2 million dollar house himself, and has a net worth of 1.5 million. But oddly enough, I see no evidence that he has worked at anything other than elected office and a few campaign positions. And given his wife is a poet it's not her money. Funny how the most ardent socialists (man spent a lot of effort helping the Sandanistas) are usually rich with no intentions of giving that up to practice what they preach.

I'd generalize and say Progressives

that's my biggest complaint about Hollywierd rich - Leonardo fly's into Paris in a private jet to lecture on climate change

James C [Avatar Producer] - has 3 mega mansions lectures in the environment and having a small foot print

I dunno. It's pretty much what zoning boards already do.

Set rent? While they can set what types of building (residential/commercial) you can build, they generally don't have the power to decide what exactly you must build.

Been done, right? Moscow was set up like that, look at how great it turned out.

The only reason communism has never worked in the history of mankind is simply because the right people haven't set it up properly.

I think De Blazio and Sanders, along with help from enlightened individuals such as Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer... they might be able to do it right.

If the people you mentioned could do Communism right, it would be the first thing they ever got right.
