Ephesians 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
There are two chapters involved in today's reading. The first is from the same link we shared yesterday. And the second is found in the next chapter. My online Bible calls this section "Instructions for Christian Households". I wonder... just for reference... how much time did Paul spend in a Christian Household? Of course, Moses wasn't one to give commandments because he was "slow of speech". But God handed Moses tablets to start the conversation with. What's Paul got... a stone or a coat rack? I would prefer to think that Paul used the homes of those who asked him to stay with them as his pattern. It's all very good advice, and it works nicely with the Two Commandments of Christ. These verses go right nicely with "Love God with all your heart, mind, and soul and Love One Another". Good for Paul! I wonder who helped him learn that.
I prefer to call these verses "bite your tongue".
If a husband doesn't take his wife and leave.... They have to live respecting the mother and father in-laws. So, when the in-laws give advice, that advice should be respected, or bite your tongue.
When I give my daughters advice, they should listen to me! I know everything. I can't even change channels on Hubby's smart TV but I know it all! I have life all figured out. If they don't want my advice, well, I know it all, so they should just bite their tongues.
When my daughter does not agree with my advice, she should just do it anyway. It wouldn't be wiser for her to do it her way and then say... "Oh, that isn't what you meant" rather than argue with me about it for hours on end. Once it's done it's done and I still know everything. I'm the mom and she's the daughter and according to the Bible... she has to obey me!!! Right? Should I bite my tongue?
These verses say I am to stay out of it until I am asked my opinion or I am invited to run the show.
I am an example to everyone I run into every day. I don't try to be... but people gossip and I give them a lot to gossip about. Now that I'm blinded, I don't go out on trails anymore, I walk around the neighborhood block [five times is a mile]. They see me every day. We talk about the weather, the animals, office management, and the landscapers. Most know I post a Bible study but I don't think any of them reads it. If I got angry and smacked the fire out of them... they would be quick to say "oh and you fancy yourself a Bible study poster".... and that gives God a black eye.
Be careful how you treat others. You might be accused of holding coats.
Be careful what you say. You might be accused of making false testimony.
I'm sure Jesus knew how to bite His tongue.
People should learn what it means to "bite your tongue".
If someone runs up in your face.... bite your tongue.
If you kids make me spitting angry... bite your tongue.
When you are asked for your opinion, give it honorably. Until then....
Bite your tongue!
