Bizarre Behavior at the SMCPS School Board Meeting Sept. 9th

The county can't raise taxes without approval of the state. Basically the county thrives on new development to grow it's budget.. I believe they have a revenue neutral budget, if the property values go up, the rate drops and the rate can only go up to the approved amount.

Not sure where you're getting your info but the County Commissioners do set the property tax rate and they set the county "piggy back" income tax.

Her biggest minus is that she acts like a crazy no-life soccer mommy who needs to grow her ass up. Feud with your neighbors and your daughter's cheerleading rival, Ms. Weaver, don't bring that nonsense to the School Board.

"Grow up" is right. From what I saw she's like a frustrated, spoiled child who is used to getting her way. I'd wager that she thought the rest of the board would kowtow to her "investigation" of tuition costs and, when they didn't buy what she was selling, she started in with the hostile body language, crazy grimaces, interrupting others, and rustling her papers when other people were giving their opinions. Then she jumped on Marilyn Crosby - "Knock it off, Marilyn, knock it off!" and wagged her finger at Crosby - because Crosby was carrying on a side conversation about her home life. Really? That's how you behave when you represent the citizens of St. Mary's County at an official school board meeting? I want my vote back.

Public vs. Private schools legal requirements

From what I understand, State law requires this.

The state does require private education if the local school system cannot provide a comparable education. Private schools in this county do not have the staffing, rigor of education level of teachers and resources of any of the private schools in this county. Perhaps her son needs religious instruction, which is not part of the curriculum in public schools. Take him to church and get off tax payer dole!

I don't know her particulars but it's not religion. Her kid is likely diagnosed as Special Ed and has issues which can't be dealt with in SMCPS schools.

This is something every parent/student has a right to.

Perhaps this is why her son needs a parochial rather than public education....tame the beast and teach some manners? Rita Weavers behavior in the board of education meeting was appalling! She is obviously accustomed to getting her way and petulant when she doesn't. Did she bully school administration into paying for her sons private placement? Based on what? Weaver should show some "transparency" which was her campaign motto, and share with the citizens of this county why public schools weren't good enough AND how much of the budget is spent on her own sons private tuition and related expenses.

You are a rude evil bitch. The kid is in private school because the school system can't provide him with the required education. All the info is out there. Shoot, all the info is available on these forums if you care to look.

Free and Appropriate Public Education doesn't mean you get the perfect, utopian, idealized education for your special needs kid - it is an appropriate education that meets that child's needs as adequately as a nondisabled students needs are met. None of the regular ed students get anything approaching a perfect education. Too many special ed parents think that their kids absolutely deserve every single little thing that they ask for - at the taxpayers expense.

They're the people who ran for office last year and won. Where were you?

One county over.

Can't say that ours are much better. They sure spend money like it grows on tobacco fields.

But that video was just awful. The guy from the supers office had to work hard to keep his composure faced with the amount of stupid in the room. If you are on a board, and like Ms Weaver you have NO idea what the staff presentation is about, you better just sit there and nod before you open your mouth to let your ignorance show. From watching the thing, it is not clear that anyone is leading this bitching coffee-table. With good leadership, this deliberation could have been over in 5 minutes.
