...hey, many of the e mails I receive suddenly have mysterious attachments to them, including SOMD notices of new posts on subscribed threads.

Delete, delete, delete.
We had the same thing in my office when malware attached itself to a known address book, started sending auto emails containing more malware, which then replicated itself on the receivers addy book. Over and over until the whole system crashed! Poof!
If it's important the sender will resend it. Don't open the attachments or confirm with the sender that they indeed sent it to you.
Forward one of the emails to me so I can take a look.
It's a text attachment of the email message. Nobody else has said anything about this happening, so it must be your computer and not our system.

...we have here is a failure to comune'kate.
I meant to say that this is happening to me and can anyone help me with the problem I am having. It is not happening to the other 'puter.
I have run Spybot.

I see - I didn't realize you had already pinpointed the issue.
Anyway, I have no idea so you're going to have to wait until some real geek shows up to tell you what setting to change.

...the way I wrote it, I can see where you'd be concerned if SOMD was somehow the problem or part of it, so, I just wanted to clarify that I know, because of the two machines, which I didn't mention at first, that it is a me problem and not a you problem.
I see - I didn't realize you had already pinpointed the issue.
Anyway, I have no idea so you're going to have to wait until some real geek shows up to tell you what setting to change.
