Bleeding following neuter

I was wondering if anyone had their boy bleed following a neutering? I took my 1yr old lab to get neutered on Wed. He has been bleeding slightly since. I took him back on Fri, after calling the vet each night to see if I should be worried, and the vet wasn't concerned. She said it looked bad but wasn't anything to worry about and she had seen worse. She said it had some to due to his age and the very developed testicles. Anyone have the same experience? Was everything OK in the long run?

They sent me home with instructions such as no running, jumping, etc for 14 days. Since he can't fit in his kennel with the collar, and due to the bleeding I am confining him to the kitchen. She said the blood is draining from the sac and the sacs don't seem to be getting bigger. I have been using cold compress a few times a day as much as he will let me. I feel bad for him now because no one I know has had a similar experience. Wondering if the vet didn't do a good job!?

I have seen the sac fill with blood, but not for it to consistently leak.

Just out of curiousity, where did you have the procedure done at?

I would take him to another vet
We've had 1 male and 2 females that we had to have fixed and never had any problems with bleeding. We were told with our male and females if they had any bleeding bring them back in asap.

Just to let you know yes, this can happen, not often, but it isn't unheard of either. Sometimes the blood collects sometimes if finds a way out. If it lasts too long you need to force them to tell you what can be done immediately to stop it so you an weigh the options of what you want to do. If he could be causing even mild trama to it that maybe why it continues some. Keep calling the vet, better safe the sorry.

I don't want to give the vet a bad rep over one case. I still don't know if he is just an extreme case or they botched it.

Well, I'll explain my experience with a local vet in Calvert County let me know if you want the name:

We took our dog to have him neutered at the suggestion of the vet because he was extremely hyper. At the time he was 1 1/2 years old and he's a Pit Bull. He never had accidents in the house, no marking territory or anything like that he was just plain hyper as hell. The vet said that having him neutered would calm him down a bit, yet not take away from his personality. So we decided to go through with the procedure.

They told us to drop him off in the morning, and we'd be able to pick him up later that evening. At around 4pm they called and said that everything went fine, but due to how active he is, they wanted to keep him overnight. The next day my husband called at 10am like they said to do, only to have them say the vet needed to see him and call us back. At this time, we got a little worried, thinking that if everything was fine, they would have told us to come get him. At around noon the vet called and said that overnight he had licked open his wound and they needed to restitch him, and that that in doing that he'd caused some severe swelling. We were stunned to say the least when she told us that they had not put a head piece on him overnight, which is why this happened. They told us that we could come pick him up Monday morning, so our baby had a 3 night stay at the vet, due to their stupidity. When my husband finally went to pick him up on Monday morning, they handed him a bag of meds and directions and told him he was good to go. When he turned to leave, he was then able to see Lance's overly swollen "sacs" and the severe bruising. Bruising that started at his sternum and went clear down his legs to his feet. Needless to say my husband FREAKED out (for a man to see something like this is pretty traumatizing lol).

They were going to let my husband go, without even addressing the swelling and bruising. They finally told him that he would have to put a warm compress on him 3x daily, and if the swelling didn't go down to bring him back. One of the meds they put in the bag was antibiotic, because he'd gotten infected. My husband ended up taking time off of work to tend to the dog, and I got weekend duty.

It was WEEKS before Lances swelling went down, and we were able to see some kind of normal healing. We are definately sure, that between the procedure and them leaving him unattending with no head gear they had done more than a couple things wrong. When my friends animals need to have something serious done to their animals, we NEVER reccommend this office. I've posted some pics taken about 1 week after we brought him home... and you can get a general idea of the uneccesary bruising and swelling.

aww poor puppy. he I bet had to be miserable. I am glad you got to bring him home and hes ok. I have only dealt with spays for the last few years and those can get tricky too. But with spays they keep the dog overnight and let them go home the next day.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Your guy looks worse than my guy. At least the bruising. Now my guy's swelling is worse but we will see how he looks in the next couple of days. Upon examining him today it looks like the blood is coming from a scab that has formed along where the incision is. He seems to be doing better as he was definitely more active when I took him out to go potty.

I will say the vet did talk to me about the swelling and bleeding when I picked him up so it's not like they just gave him back. And when I took him back they looked at him and assured me he was fine and it was nothing to be worried about. They had seen worse and they knew he looked bad. Well let me go so I can take care of him. Thanks for all of your responses. I feel better now that he is starting to recover.

NONE of my females ever stayed over night... And they DON'T have to stay overnight! That's just the vet getting more money!! Really... Why would u leave your dog somewhere there is no one on staff?? What if something happens? DUH! U just paid to have ur dog stay in a crate not monitored in case they pulled out sutures! Oh lord!

Oh and with my females.... They were pexied as well. That is a intense procedure where they stretch the stomach and suture it to the inner wall of the ribs. Little more painful than a spay... But went home that same day..... No problems!
