The Board of Education at its Oct. 10 meeting honored four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for their accomplishments in academic achievement, personal responsibility and career readiness. They are Carlos Eldridge Jr., a junior at Westlake High School; Liumotumotua’an “Liu” Aumavae, an eighth grader at Theodore G. Davis Middle School; Izabella Krebs, a fifth grader at Indian Head Elementary School; and Casey Shamenek, a fifth grader at Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School.
Eldridge was honored by the Board for his accomplishments in the area of academic achievement. He is the vice president of the Charles County Association of Student Councils (CCASC) and an honor roll student. Eldridge serves as an officer to the Maryland Association of Student Councils, member of the indoor and outdoor track teams, is a trombone player in the school band and is the Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) liaison. He enjoys taking challenging courses and is taking several Advanced Placement (AP) classes this school year. His course load also includes Latin III, honors-level chemistry and pre-calculus. Eldridge is a Life Scout with the Boy Scouts and plans to pursue his Eagle Scout badge this coming year. He plans to attend Princeton University after he graduates to study law.
Aumavae is an honor roll student and was selected for recognition before the Board for his academic achievements and community involvement. He is president of the Davis Builders Club and member of the National Junior Honor Society. Aumavae is a current Scholars Course of Study student, in which he takes advanced level classes in subjects such as enrichment science and social studies, Algebra I, French and gifted language arts. He is a leader among his peers and serves as a role model to his Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) team and chess club members. Aumavae is community oriented and helped to organize Wreaths Across America activities for Davis students as well as clothing drives to benefit those in need. He plans to apply for the engineering program at North Point High School and attend Stanford University after he graduates to study engineering.
Krebs was honored before the Board for displaying personal responsibility. She goes out of her way to help her classmates and others in need. She has been on the principal’s honor roll for most of her elementary school career and demonstrates a positive attitude. Krebs helps students in her class work to their potential and displays empathy when they are having a difficult day. She works hard in class and puts forth her best effort in all class assignments and lessons. In addition to her commitment to classwork and being a good friend, Krebs excels in her participation in school-related activities. She is a member of MESA, the school chorus and math team. She also likes to play sports on community teams.
Shamenek is an honor roll student at Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy and was honored by the Board in the area of career readiness. Her teachers describe her as a dedicated and hardworking student who goes out of her way to help others. She loves to problem solve and work on the computer. As a third grader, Shamenek was recognized for writing the most lines of code among her peers during a computer science event. She set a future goal of becoming either an engineer or veterinarian because she enjoys helping others. Shamenek plays the clarinet, is a member of the school MESA team and loves to read. She also likes to ride horses and play computer games.
The Board of Education honors outstanding CCPS students and staff members during its monthly meetings. Those honored are chosen by their school principals for demonstrating excellence in the classroom and school community.
