The Board of Education at its April 9 meeting honored five Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility.
Honored at the meeting were Deuvon Desir, Faith Fisher, Asalah Keita, Jamel Williams and Maize Wimbush.
Desir is a senior at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center and was honored by the Board in the area of academic achievement. He is a second-year student in the Interactive Media Production career and technology education (CTE) program and plans to pursue a career in audio engineering. Desir is a leader among his peers and honor-roll student. He has received the Stethem Student of the Month award several times for demonstrating hard work, leadership, character and citizenship. Desir is a member of SkillsUSA, a national organization that prepares students for careers in technical fields, and demonstrates its goals of high ethical standards, superior work skills and pride. He works part time at a local restaurant and is saving money to start his own recording business. After he graduates, Desir plans to attend the Conservatory for Recording Art and Sciences in Arizona to pursue certification in audio engineering.
Fisher is a fifth-grade student at William B. Wade Elementary School and was honored by the Board in the area of academic achievement. She excels in all subjects and maintains straight A’s on her report card. Fisher is a leader and role model for her peers. She arrives early to school each day to greet students in the main office and pass out positive behavior tokens. Fisher has earned top scores on school assessments, is a member of the math team and Just Say No club. This year, she served as a Wade representative on All-County Chorus. Fisher is known among Wade teachers as an excellent student who is dedicated to her studies.
Keita is a fifth-grade student at Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School and was honored by the Board in the area of personal responsibility. She has attended Jenifer since she began third grade and has earned straight A’s each quarter. Keita takes accelerated math and reading courses, and plans to be a fashion designer. Last year, she earned the top individual score for the Jenifer math team. She is also a member of Destination Imagination (DI) and enjoys using her creative skills to create backdrops and design sets for her team. She plays the viola in the fifth-grade orchestra and takes lessons outside of school. Keita’s teachers describe her as an excellent leader, good citizen and outstanding student.
Williams is a fifth-grade student at Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School and was honored by the Board in the area of academic achievement. Since he started school in prekindergarten, Williams has been a role model for his classmates. He is a goal setter and works hard to achieve success. Williams earns an A average each quarter and is consistently named to the Principal’s Honor Roll. He completes all assignments on time and goes above his teacher’s expectations on homework and class projects. Williams enjoys helping his peers and demonstrates respect and responsibility. He recently earned second place in the school science fair and takes accelerated math and reading classes. Williams is a member of the school math team and plays trombone in the band. Outside of school, Williams plays football, soccer and baseball.
Wimbush is a seventh-grade student at Matthew Henson Middle School and was honored by the Board in the area of personal responsibility. She is a committed student who strives to be a positive role model for others. Wimbush is consistently named to the honor roll, takes accelerated classes and demonstrates pride in her academics. She has a positive demeanor and strives to support her peers in need of assistance. She plays the clarinet in the school band and is an avid cyclist. Wimbush recently donated more than $5,000 to Children’s National Medical Center and was named an “inspiring cyclist” by Bicycling Magazine. Her teachers describe her as an excellent example of a motivated student who inspires others.
The Board each month honors students and staff members who were nominated by their principals for recognition.
