BALTIMORE, MD (February 6, 2019) – The Maryland Board of Public Works approved more than $60 million in grants and loans today to reduce pollution and save energy. The board is composed of Governor Larry Hogan, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot.
“These are smart investments to protect public health and the environment while saving money and energy in Maryland communities,” said Maryland Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles. “Reducing polluted stormwater runoff in Montgomery County, repairing a sewer line in the Luke area of Allegany County and using energy efficient equipment at the Hagerstown sewage treatment plant will help us to green and grow the state’s economy and lead in the race to protect and restore Chesapeake Bay watersheds.”
The following projects were approved today:
Montgomery County Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Permit-Water Quality Restoration project – Montgomery County
A $60,619,600 Water Quality State Revolving Loan Fund loan to Montgomery County will fund the planning, design and construction of projects that will use stormwater treatment options such as small rain gardens, environmental site design options, pond retrofits, green infrastructure and streets, stream restorations and repairs to storm drain systems. These projects will help the county comply with the anticipated requirements of the 2019 renewal of its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) discharge permit and the Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay restoration plan. The projects are designed to mitigate stormwater flooding and reduce stormwater pollution, including nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment pollution, to improve water quality in local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay.
City of Hagerstown Oxygen Aeration Basin Mixer Motor Replacement project – Washington County
An $81,454 Energy Water Infrastructure Program grant to the City of Hagerstown will fund the replacement of mixer motors with high efficiency motors at the Hagerstown Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Town of Luke Landslide Sewer Line Repair project – Allegany County
A $65,000 Bay Restoration Fund grant to the Town of Luke will fund the planning and design of repairs to or replacement of a sewer line damaged by a landslide. The project will also stabilize the site to prevent future damage.
