Charles Co. Board seeking input on Superintendent search

The Board of Education of Charles County is continuing its search process for the next Superintendent of Charles County Public Schools (CCPS). The Board is seeking additional public input about the search process and questions to ask during finalist interviews. Community members including parents, students, staff and Charles County residents can complete a one-question survey to provide the Board with ideas for finalist questions.

Click here to submit a question. Deadline to submit a question is 5 p.m., Monday, May 10.

The Board plans to conduct a three-question public interview via Zoom once it narrows the search to three finalists. The community will be able to watch the interviews, which CCPS will post on the school system’s website. The Board will use the top three questions provided by the public for the question-answer forum.

The Board is also asking students, staff and community members to watch the forum and provide feedback through a survey published with the video. More details about the interviews will be posted on the CCPS website as finalized.

The Board hopes to announce the new CCPS top administrator by June 8 at its monthly meeting. The new Superintendent is replacing Superintendent Kimberly A. Hill, who told the Board in February 2021 she would not be seeking renewal of her contract for another four-year term. Hill, who has served two terms as Superintendent, is retiring from the school system at the end of the 2020-21 school year.

The Board has completed its review of applicants and will interview selected candidates this month. There were 17 applicants from across the nation. Earlier this school year, the Board, through its consultants with the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE), conducted a survey for employees and community members to provide characteristics they look for in a superintendent. The Board advertised nationally and locally for candidates.

Maryland law requires Boards to award a four-year contract, and the new Superintendent’s term would begin July 1, 2021, and end June 30, 2025.
