Boarding Vs. Sitting

Just a little something to chew on the next time you take a vacaition in the summer, and need to arrange car for your dogs...

A breeder friend of mine in FL recently found out a dog she had just sold was killed when the HVAC for the home where the dog had been sold malfunctioned.

The new owner was off on business for a few days and hired a pet sitter. The first day, the pet sitter came by 4 times, no problems. The next morning early, no problems. Around noon returned and the temp in the home was over 105, the thermostat malfunctioned and the furnace went on and stayed on. THe owner had the new Dobe and another dog, a GSD, and both succumbed to heat stroke. A single bowl of water does not last long over 105 degrees. It only took a couple hours to kill the dogs.

Often dogs are more comfortable left at home. But remember, in the heat of the summer months, it may be of benefit to sacrifice their comfort for safety. At a kennel, at least they are monitored during business hours constantly... and even at night, in some larger kennels.

:cds:... they are not old enough to drive... and I hate to think about "one" of mine behind the wheel!! she is a blonde - no doubt!

I understand what you are saying.... but if the sitter came that AM... returned around noon? and the house was that hot.... really that could happen anyday you are at work! I could come home to find my house at a toasty 98 degrees... and my dogs kennel during the day.

Some dogs cant handle the kennel situation very well... and dont eat for the whole time they are there.

Oh my that's awful ! I worry about the a/c dying while I'm at work - and there's no shade over my place at all - so it would get very hot very fast with no a/c.

I did a pet-sitting job for some folks who only contracted me to come 2 times a day - but they had recently added a GSD puppy, so I voluntarily went there 3/4 times each day so the pup wouldn't have to wait so long or possibly (probably) wallow in it's own mess in the crate. It was a PITA to go so often since they lived 45 min round trip from me, but the greeting I got from the dogs was worth the extra visits.

i agree with your statement that some dogs dont do well in a kennel situation and won't eat. I have seen it happen where dogs go the whole entire time the owner is gone without eating because in most kennels they are very noisey and some dogs aren't used to all the noise and get nervous and some dogs aren't also used to being caged up all day with a few visits to go potty here and there. I will never board my dog or cat as long as I am alive even though petsitters cost more money as most of them will if you ask for it stay overnight with your pet and make several stops in during the day to check on them (that is if they aren't super busy and can). I would rather pay it so my pets can be comfortable in there normal living spaces. Plus the lady I will have care for bruno loves her to death and will even take her to work with her so she can be with people all day long instead of alone allday.

You maybe. I don't live alone though. Rarely is it just the dogs for more than an hour or so.

most kennels have "runs" where they are allowed to go in and out all day... But it really the noise, and confusion of what just happened.

I had someone come to my house to take care of a few of my pets when I was gone.... and yet one of them didnt eat the whole week I was gone, and the other ended up with the runs.... so its damn if you do and damn if you dont.

the point is..... they were stressed .. and would have been at any cost!

I would never leave my dogs in kennel situation. Ever.

But, that story sounds somewhat strange.

Strange how?

I myself dang near lost a dog to heat stroke in less than 20 minutes. We were at the training field when I lived in FL, and after working I put him up in the shade, with a 5 gallon bucket. He knocked the bucket over, but nobody noticed till I went to check on him, and he was down. Had to put him in the kiddy pool and hold his head up out of the water till he cooled enough to come around.

Less than 20 minutes, it was about 95 degrees. Depending on temp, activity, and availability of water a dog will go down FAST.

She works too. Just at night.

I WISH I could afford to do it all on my own, but alas, not so lucky.

:yay:

When we went to Boston last month the kid across the street watched my dogs... they like him so they'll let him in :lmao:

Gazelle wouldn't eat. As soon as we got home she scarfed down a bowl, puked at my feet, and went back to the bowl... She missed me! :lmao:

Now now people, I'm not saying Kennel is better... it's just something to consider is all, it's not something people really think about. :yay:

it doesnt take long....

think what she was saying may have been more on the "malfuntion" side of things.

I can see the AC stop working.... but the heat to kick on... is a little weird because someone wouldnt have the heat set to 105.

usually it would kick off when it reaches its set temp... but I do see the inside of the house getting to 105 without AC on. FAST!

even over the last month.... think how fast your house got hot and how long your AC ran... when mine went out two yrs ago...it was over 90 degrees upstairs and 85 degrees down stairs..(with a window unit)

Ours did the opposite... we have a digital, and it kept kicking DOWN to 55 at random times. Had to replace it, and has been fine since.
