I'd like to buy a/some books for new parents but I don't want to spend money on something that isn't very helpful. Anyone have any suggestions?

What to expect when you're expecting and/or what to expect the first year are both VERY useful...IMO

Consider a nice collection of classic nursery rhymes that Mom can start reading to the baby very early. Babies respond to the rhyming patterns.

Mother Goose has a nice complete collection of them, usually available at Bay Books. :flowers:

I didn't find any book helpful with either my son OR my daughter. And, god knows, I had a zillion of them  Everything they said, from pregnancy to breastfeeding to terrible twos, my son did something different and threw me for a loop. By the time the daughter came along, I was an old hand and didn't need the book.

I'd get the Mother Goose or some Dr. Seuss - THOSE are awesome books :yay:

Why not buy a nice blank journal and have other parents you know write some "things they wished they had known" before they had children or maybe just some helpful hints, or stories.

I thought the "Girlfriend's Guide" books were pretty helpful...they tell it like it is, and don't gloss things over. I don't remember which one I had, but they have them for pregnancy, the first year of motherhood, toddler years, etc.

terbear, this sounds like a cute thing to do at a baby shower if you haven't already had your baby. :baby:

But wait, there's more...
Parenting for Dummies :yay: I've given this to a few of my friends when they're expecting. It's practical info/advice and humorous with the cartoons, and I believe it covers babies through teens, if I recall correctly.

I have 5 girlfriends that are due to have babies between October and April:yikes: A few are first time mom's and I may go with the book idea this time for showers:yay:
