That was back in '84, when I was stationed in Panama City(Tyndall AFB). There was no such thing as a mouse to click on icons, because there weren't any icons! There was no desktop either.

When you turned on the PC, and it booted up, all you had was a dark screen and a ......C:/......flashing at you. You typed in the name of the program you wanted to execute, and voila! :starcat:
in '81 I took my first programming class. no computers.

We wrote our code in Basic, then the professor deskchecked it and gave it back to us.

I didn't do so well in that class.

My first programming class was in '73, FORTRAN. Worked on a model 33 Teletype connected to a DEC PDP-8 50 miles away...

lest we forget the timeless CLASSY Christmas wreaths made out of computer punch cards.

The COOL ones were painted silver.

I remember dropping an entire box of those and spending the next two days putting them in order back in the box.

Im a really Old Guy:killingme I remember party line phones, go to make a phone call and hear someone else talking.
I remember when gas was under $3.50 a gallon.:killingme
The sad thing is our kids will be saying that when they start driving and gas is 10 bucks a gallon. I also heard that those pumps that have the scrolling numbers only go to $3.99, so gas prices get higher than that, those people either have to get new digital pumps or be out of business.

 Why would they be searching for their loved ones on our butts?

Mr. Cynical here, but I sincerely think we have the technology and we could probably cure these things. HOWEVER, pharmaceutical companies, doctors and assorted medical industries would lose millions - if not billions - of dollars if these things were cured.

There's no money to be made from healthy people.
I was zoning out in digital TV mode when I posted that. I was thinking along the lines of reality TV and watching the mess over in China. :bawl:

As for the second part of your post, I totally agree with you. We have to have the technology. This is my crack pot idea on it all. I believe cancer is caused by a back up of toxins in the liver. If you eat foods that require the liver to do little work, then it gives the liver the chance to clean itself up a bit, and the body can rid itself of cancer cells. I am just thinking the cure has to be easier than doctors make it with all the barbaric treatment procedures.

I was driving this morning and heard a great song on the radio and was hoping the DJ would come on and say who sang the dang song but thought, hey, I can just google the lyrics. And if I like the song, download the MP3 on my ipod. Anyway, I remember sitting by the radio on Saturdays to hear the top 20 countdown with a cassette player and when the song came on the radio, recording it onto cassette. Seems like so much work now. :faint:

Try taking a COBOL class in 1980 using punched cards. :jameo: I didn't take BASIC until 1983 or 4 - I think they had TRS-80s with dual floppies by then.
