I have acquired a couple floor box (wooden) heaters. What can I put under them because it's carpeted floors and everything I've read says NO to running them on carpet.

They sell special insulated panels that will work for your use, called hearth pads. Or you could get some 12"x12" concrete pavers and make about a 6'x6' area to place the wood stove on top.
