Boxing: Chris Algieri vs Manny Pacquiao

I’m on hiatus from my boxing forum so SOMD is stuck with my boxing posts for a while. This is a big fight coming up in a few months. Chris Algieri is a kick boxer turned boxer who never had an amateur fight and climbed the ladder while everyone dismissed him. A few months ago he got a title fight with Ruslan Provodnikov who is called the 'Siberian Rocky' with good reason. Anyhow, Algieri was picked as a soft opponent for Ruslan but I guess no one told Algieri this because he walked out of the ring with the WBO Light Welterweight Championship. This November Algieri gets a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao who is considered by most people, me not included, as one of the best pound for pound fighters of our era.

The kickoff press conference for the November 22 clash of champions between WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBO jr welterweight champion Chris Algieri took place Monday at the Venetian Macao in Macau, China.

“This fight is going to be a good fight,” promised Pacquiao. “Algieri is undefeated, he’s a good boxer, I saw his last fight with Ruslan. He took a lot of punches but he’s a very tough boxer and fought back…my opponent is tough and I like that. The last fight that we had here with Brandon Rios we did a good job, but Algieri’s different than Rios. He’s faster than Rios, he’s taller than Rios, so it will give me a hard time.

"That's why the number one thing that would concern me would be his experience," the 30-year-old Algieri told reporters.

"In terms of his speed and footwork and the things he does that everyone looks at when they think of Manny, I'm not so worried about that stuff, because what I feel is the great equalizer in boxing is the jab.

"I don't care what you got. I don't care how strong you are. I don't care how fast you are. A good jab and a good mind can neutralize anything."

Algieri picked himself off the canvas twice in the first round of his last bout in June against Russian Ruslan Provodnikov on his way to a split decision victory that improved his record to 20-0 with eight knockouts.
