Boy Acted Drunk Then Passed Out for 6 Hours

Ubi bene ibi patria
"Shelby Esses remembers when her 20-month-old son Jacob became ill after apparently playing with and swallowing Aqua Dots, the latest toy made in China to be pulled from shelves by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

"He came stumbling out into the living room … and he just started weaving kind of like he was drunk or something and he fell down," Esses told "Good Morning America." "My husband picked him up, he was pretty limp, and then he started vomiting."

ok..now this was my thought when i first heard about this, and especially after reading it...

why was a kid that young allowed to play with something he could EASILY swallow or choke on? I mean, shouldn't these parents also be investigated for neglect? By the sounds of it, he came out into the living room after being alone in another room playing with the things...at least thats how i see it.

not a lot of info in the article. perhaps they were in someone else's home and didn't know that these items were in the child's reach. maybe they belonged to an older sibling who left them out. it's hard to tell how the child might have gotten to them.

This kid was way too young for this kind of toy but it might have belonged to an older sibling. I have a heck of a time trying to keep my toddler from giving his food and toys to the baby. There is no substitute for direct supervision.

What do the Chinese have to say about all this? Because I'm wondering why they would threaten their export business by continuing to send poisonous products to the US.

Considering we're the largest consumer country world-wide, we have to be one of their biggest customers. And if they continue to send defective products, we'll have to cut them loose, which will hurt their economy.

Are they so desperate to kill us all that they'd threaten their own well-being to do so?

Yahoo had a news article on this yesterday stating that a 2 year old boy, a 10 year old girl and a 19 month old have all been hospitalized and/or treated because of this toy. I don't know what the heck to think either as far as why China suddenly can't seem to make many toys that aren't hazardous to our children. These are some of the leading toy manufacturers in the world! I have no idea what my grandchildren are getting for Christmas and that's the truth. Fortunately they are infants and a toddler so I might be able to just get creative because I honestly don't want to buy toys!

I won't be buying any toys this year. If you're not old enough for a book, you're getting a blanket.

I can't help wondering if this is really all accidental or unintended. Is it possible they are intentionally waging chemical warfare against our children?

I'm not usually a paranoid conspiracy theory type, but enough is enough.

Why does everyone assume the toy was manufactured wrong? Isn't it possibly a DESIGN issue. I mean, when the toy designers (whoever they may be) came up with this idea and figured out the chemical mix to make the stupid dots stick together when they get wet. It's THEIR fault. They send the formula to the production team and the production team goes about getting the product manufactured. The manufacturers just go through the process.

THe DESIGN team should have discovered what would happen when eaten long before they ever hit the manufacturers floor.

I agree and I'm not even a parent. Don't most kids put everything in their mouths  Why wasn't a test done for this

I was more thinking that there's tampering between when it leaves China and when it lands on store shelves. If this glue on these toys is that toxic, wouldn't more kids be getting sick, since certainly more than three people bought the toy? Would they poison just one or two of their batch?

That seems unlikely to me, so I more wonder if there isn't someone in packaging or on the receiving end that's doing this. It wouldn't be too difficult for some Al Qaeda person to get a job at a warehouse and swap a few boxes before they get shipped to their final destination.

:nerd: I know, I know - I've been reading too many Vince Flynn books.

I heard Dr. Gupta on HNN this a.m. saying that it is the way the beads (?) metabolize in the body that causes the GHB to be released. Now is there a test that can exactly replicate the metabolization process in the lab?

yes :yay:

honestly, its not like i've done it, but i'm sure. it can't be that hard...the body just uses enzymes and stuff to metabolize...nothing that can't be replicated.

sorry to burst your bubble my dear. that will not happen. economics aren't that simple. can you honestly see our economy surviving after cutting off the people whom we get the majority of our products from? 99 out of 100 things in the US (ok, not definite numbers...but still) are either designed, produced, or contain a part that was created in China.

If we cut off trade with them, we will suffer devastatingly as well.

thought the same thing...BUT

another idea.

been hearing for years that china has a strong possiblity of being the next nation we are at a major war with...so could our government by any chance be really bringing to public attention things that were probably problems before, just so we have yet another excuse to attack them if it comes to that?

just a thought.

If we go to war with China we stand a good chance of being toast - don't we?

idk...do you know something i don't?

if we go to war with them RIGHT THIS SECOND...yes...we are toast. we have an extensive amount of our military in other countries, with our forces spread over so many nations, nothing positive will get accomplished.

If the politicians and PC weanies hamstring our military in a war with China the same way they have in all the recent wars, we WILL be toast in a hurry.
