I wondered the same thing. CCSO doing SMCSO's job?

Don't worry though... when election time comes around, the people will still praise Cameron for how good of a job the CCSO SMCSO is doing because 'he goodz county boy!

As for the BB guns. My guess is that the idiots just saw what looked like standard guns and didn't realize they were BB guns until they were in the woods. Probably why they left 5 of the 8 behind!

My understanding is that the three Southern Maryland Sheriff's offices have a mutual aid understanding and can call for aid from these jurisdictions should conditions call for it. Apparently, all of the on duty deputies were busy handling other calls for assistence so they called over to Calvert County to request assistance. It seems like a reasonable thing to do. Why do you feel its necessary to bad mouth our Sheriff and our deputies? I assume from your response you're just a cop hater. There are plenty of you out there.

Here we go again.

Anyone who remotely "bad mouths" government officials (aka Police) simply must be a cop hater!

Better not make any bad comments about County Commissioners, Senators, Representatives, President, or any other public official either!

You are free to assume whatever you like.

Just as I am free to assume that anyone who accepts rising drug overdoses, drug usage, traffic accidents, and overall crime yet, still thinks it is a good thing to re-elect the guy who claims to "clean it up" year, after year... after year is.. in fact... an idiot!

It was at the same time as the shootings at the firehouse and IHOP.

Good catch, Tech. I didnt notice that this news is almost a month old. Turns out the SMCSO was indeed busy. I then wonder why SMnewsnet didn't mention both why our officers didn't respond, and why they are only reporting this 23 days after the fact.

I was wondering why also. Had to look back to if anything was going down.
That site reports incidents days later.

No, I think it's a political bias, not a cop hater, and the post you quoted was trying to point that out.
The sheriff's department, like fire and EMS can't predict a spike in demand when they take calls, so if they get caught short there are working agreements with surrounding agencies to fill the gap. I've seen the Pax River Fire and Ambulance run calls off base because the fire departments or EMS in the county were out on other calls.
It's common practice all over the country, if anything it shows that the SMCSO works with the neighboring agencies.

I dunno, there are reasons to not be a fan of Sheriff Cameron. I dont agree with him on quite a few things. This particular incident not one of them, now that I know they were working two shooting scenes. His stance on red light cameras, his stance on encrypted comms, his stance on enforcing cell phone while driving, all of these things make me unhappy with him.

Yep, I had to read it twice, confirmed it was CCSO by the tacticool on responding officers who were not MSP.

Evidently, SMCSO was too busy :) Wonder why they only got BB guns, maybe becuase unlike some places that sell firearms, they actually lock thier sh%$ up?
I saw not one, but two SMCSO SUVs working an accident at the intersection where the Weiss, KFC, Mikey D's, and all that is in Solomons the other day. Foreign exchange student program?

When one or two incidents uses up all your resources where another county has to respond.......you have a manpower issue. Constant issue that plagues St. Mary's.

Well, GL, I would think that two shootings, each with large unruly crowds that need to be controlled is a bit out of the norm. You cant staff to outlier conditions or you waste money.

Well, it's either there are super crime sprees being committed and requiring investigating with 4 to 6 Sheriff's vehicles on each site occurring in St. Mary's, or all those deputies are sitting in court everyday bearing witness to all the traffic tickets they issue. Gotta get those overtime hours in don cha know?

First, the Sheriff has to manage the resources he is GIVEN by the commissioners (and to a degree the state). It's a function of tax dollars allocated to his department. He can only request additional money to hire new officers and purchase more equipment.
Second, recognize that St. Mary's county is fairly large geographically, It's long, Charlotte Hall to Pt. Lookout. There are not many roads connecting the Patuxent and Potomac Corridors as MDOT likes to label them. So while the population is not large, the area they have to cover is a challenge. Back to the first point, funding and staffing is usually tied to population (taxpayers).
Third, you cannot staff to the unexpected demand level. You staff to the normal or average demand. That's why for all emergency services surrounding communities set up mutual assistance programs. Nobody staffs to handle the unexpected surge in demand, not even major cities, they have to rely on the state, federal and other agencies for assistance in a crisis.

To me this is a none story, to me it comes off as a political attack, a political foe jumping on a call to create a strawman issue.

If I am uninformed, please, enlighten me.
On which point was a wrong?
I have no issue with Mr. Cameron, I don;t know him, but from what I see he's an honest, competent and interested in the well being of the community.
From what I know of the budget process, all money flow through the board of county commissioners.
But when it comes to taxes, the state legislature has some say in what the county can do.
If you saw the coverage of the shooting in North Philadelphia recently you would have seen state and FBI on hand.
The Philadelphia PD has a large force but in a crisis type event they needed backup because there is still a lot of city to patrol and other crimes are going down. Again, I don't see a story here.
