Man arrested for alleged holiday bomb plot

Suspect planned attacks in Rockford, Ill.; court appearance later today

WASHINGTON - A man was arrested in the Chicago area on Friday for allegedly plotting to attack Rockford, Ill., over the holidays, officials told NBC News.

The plan involved a bombing and a shooting, the officials said.

The man had no accomplices and was not part of a terrorist cell, sources said on condition of anonymity. He will be appearing in court later Friday, NBC’s Pete Williams reported.

The FBI has been aware of the plot and has been monitoring him closely, Williams reported. The plan was allegedly ideologically motivated. No other details were released, but authorities said the arrest eliminated the risk of the attack being carried out.

This breaking news story will be updated.

I know he is just a suspect but if he is convicted, this country should make an example out of him...I'm sure he'll get his wrist slapped and go on his merry way because he really didn't do anything.... :coffee:

If he's indicted, I hope they throw this out of court.

I do find it more than a little interesting, however, that the more mainstream (read: leftist) network, MSNBC, named him "Derrick".
