BULLETIN: One missing after blast

An explosion blew out windows and started a fire Friday at one of the last remaining industrial plants on Baltimore’s waterfront, fire officials said. One worker was missing, but no injuries were reported.

The explosion occurred about 10 a.m. at the Domino Sugar plant, a well-known landmark topped by a large neon sign that can be seen from the nearby Inner Harbor.

When firefighters arrived they found “many windows busted out from the explosion” and heavy fire and some smoke, said Kevin Cartwright, a fire department spokesman. The fire was quickly brought under control, Cartwright said.

The explosion was reported on the ninth floor and fire was found on the fifth and ninth floors, the fire spokesman said. The cause wasn’t clear.

As a kid, on our long roadtrips from wherever my dad happened to be stationed, that big red sign was always a welcome sight because I knew it wouldn't be much longer. Still reminds me of Christmas in Baltimore.
