Brokeback Mountain

Did anyone else here see this film? I thought it was SPECTACULAR and purchased the DVD a few days ago. I can't believe this didn't win Best Picture, especially over the very mediocre Crash, one of the most contrived dramas in recent memory. Brokeback Mountain, however, is a beautiful love story with fantastic cinematography and excellent performances, especially from Heath Ledger ("The Brothers Grimm") and Jake Gyllenhaal ("Jarhead"). Just a mesmerizing western romance with an extremely sad tearjerker ending. I definitely recommend it, if you're open-minded enough to accept that it is a love story between two men. Incredible piece of cinema!

Yeah, because Brokeback Mountain is such a realistic story and not contrived at all.

I plan on seeing it, but I'm fairly certain it will forever ruin my mini-crush on Heath Ledger. :ohwell:

I saw it the other day. I didn't think it deserved the Best Film award, but the chemistry between the boys made it decent. Not one of my top picks...

I really thought the film was moving as well. I'm glad that I bought it too, so that I can watch it again after I get it back off lending it out. It really is a great flick about love and heartbreak and life's difficult choices. I loved it.

I wouldn't bother recommending it unless you're already open and interested. This isn't to say that it isn't a worthy film, it simply isn't worth ruining the love story if you already have a prejudicial preconceived notion of how the world should exist.

I'm glad another here enjoyed it. I agree, I wouldn't advise hard-edged gay haters to watch this film. I know it's been said by critics this could open minds, but there are minds which can't be budged. For example, I saw the trailer for this film before a showing of the film Flightplan last September and many of the people in the audience just threw vicious jeers at the screen and massive laughs erupted throughout the audience. Those types of people shouldn't see the film, as it's obvious it's depiction of a romance blooming and evolving between two men will just disgust them beyond belief. I also wouldn't advise people with low attention spans to watch this. It's not an incredibly slow film or anything, but it's a film about character development and dialogue, so hardcore action fans might be bored.

I just can't get over how brilliant Heath Ledger was in this film, though. I've seen him in tons of movies before, including "Lords Of Dogtown," "A Knight's Tale," "The Patriot," "10 Things I Hate About You," and "The Brothers Grimm" (another one of my 2005 favorites), and thought he was a decent actor, but he just wowed me here. He completely disappeared into his character - from vocals to physical movements - and I love those types of performances. I thought he deserved the Oscar and was better than actual winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), Joaquin Phoenix (Walk The Line), David Strathairn (Good Night, And Good Luck.), AND Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow). Ledger's is one of the best performances I've seen in a long time.

Okay, saw the movie last night. It was really good, HOWEVER, it didn't instill in me any sympathy for either of them. I felt more sorry for their wives, especially the one that knew. It has always aggravated me when gay men do the whole straight thing, like getting a wife, making babies THEN they figure out they can't "live a lie anymore" :duh: . I say if you're gay, just be gay and live that life. Don't victimize some poor woman in order to hide it, ya know?

And if you don't like the movie you're a close minded hateful bigot, is that what you are trying to say??

I'm sure all gay men and most of the women will love the movie.. me I have NO desire to see it.
