Brush fire out at Myrtle Point Park in St. Mary’s County

CALIFORNIA, Md. (FOX 5 DC) - Fire crews put out a brush fire at Myrtle Point Park in St. Mary’s County Wednesday evening.

St. Mary's Emergency Management tells FOX 5 a call came in at 5:45 p.m. for a brush fire at the park.

The fire was placed under control at 7 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Units cleared the scene at 8 p.m.

Yup. I was trying to see exactly where the fire was. There was one spot along there where the "fishermen" hung out, leave trash everywhere, but it was off the trail and not noticeable unless you ventured off-trail. One time I found a charcoal fire burning and no one around, and immediately thought of this when I read the article.

Seriously, my thought was this, unintended consequences of a "nature park" where all the dead growth is looked at as "a natural habitat" to be presweved.

Camp Fire Caused Myrtle Point Blaze

Staff Writer

According to a preliminary report from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the brush fire at Myrtle Point the evening of March 10 was caused by a camping fire located on the beach.

Gregg Bortz, media relations chief for DNR, said the fire burned one acre of marsh land and seven-tenths-of-an-acre of forest.

The blaze brought multiple units from St. Mary’s County, including Bay District and Hollywood volunteer companies, as well as Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department to combat it.

Firefighters spent about 90 minutes extinguishing the flames.

DNR is asking anyone with information about the fire, including those who started it, to call Natural Resources Police at 410-260-8888.

How are people allowed to built fires in public parks with kids playing?? A fire risk, a safety risk, a secondhand smoke risk, an environmental hazard

It's time for the local government to crack down and make things safer wouldn't you think? Why are so many people allowed to pollute the air of the community burning their tires/trash while potentially burning down my house. While I like it here because of the peace and quietness there's always some incident of Neanderthal thinking endangering the community at large, it really makes me miss chevy.
