Bug or Animal?

What bug or animal makes a click sound? The single clicks are about 5 seconds apart and it sounds just like an old clock. It has been right outside our living room window for a few days and I hear it from around dusk until late at night. We've tried to investigate, but our flowers and garden seem to hide whatever it is and it's driving me crazy!!! :jameo:

I've never heard a Katydid or Cricket make this sound before. I've even searched online for soundbites and cannot find anything like this...

Hmmm, this might be it! Just substitute MD for VA!

I agree with BlackSheep. Click Beetle. They're common critters and, when mature at least, don't do much harm.

The click comes when they bend in the middle... then snap! back into their normal linear posture. Kinda neat - hold one in your hand one day and watch it.

Katydid, without a doubt.
I had one inside about a month ago, and only knew he was there because I heard the loud clicking, and went to investigate.

Click beetles only click when threatened - it's a defense mechanism. They aren't going to sit outside your window clicking away like that. Plus they're tiny and their click is not that loud - you probably wouldn't even hear them from inside.

ooh, sorry... didn't realize how old this thread was.

I'm sure the culprit is gone by now! :ohwell:
