Bullying Seminar at Middle School

Apparently there was a seminar at the middle school yesterday on bullying. I venture to say that the speaker went a "bit" over the top to get her point across. Kiddo reported that the woman spoke of her days being bullied, actively describing getting a fetal pig thrown at her with a part of the pig organ hitting her in the eye, her high heels dumped in a toilet with "disgusting, dark, urine" and other use of inappropriate language (not directly said, but directly implied) such as use of the F word, the B word. My kid (who is a rule follower, not a bully) told me that the speaker was very aggressively speaking, threatening to lock the doors, and demanding that everyone close their eyes to imagine what it feels like to be basically treated like human excrement. The speaker went on to say that she cried herself to sleep, screamed so loudly at times in her anger/sadness from being bullied that she spit up BLOOD, and actually was happy about that because she thought maybe she had something serious like CANCER and then she would not have to deal with the bullies anymore.

So I ask...was this really necessary? Ugh, I get that she was trying to get a point across, but c'mon. The dramatics turned a lot of kids OFF to the whole thing...which I believe may have produced the opposite effect on the kids.

We were discussing this last night during dinner also. My kids said the same thing she was acting all  & stuff. They were laughing about it/her so I am not sure that her over the top approach really got through to the kids. Of course I let them know it wasnt right to laugh about bullying or her that it is a serious problem and nothing to joke about.
