Buried!

Matthew 27:57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
So... the tomb was hewn out of the rock. It was a cave! One way in.... one way out! Jesus wasn't meant to lay in the broken pots of potter's field. The King should have a better tomb. What better than one carved from rock?

This is the evening.... the day before, in the evening, they were sharing a Passover meal. Now Jesus is dead in a hollowed-out boulder. So, we are going into the evening that makes one day? Or should I say this is the beginning of the second day? After all, it's been about 24 long hours.

Let's not forget Joseph of Arimathea.... he's a disciple. He couldn't just give up everything and follow Jesus like John and Peter. People depended on him to run the ship so they could earn their paychecks and make their rent. But none the less, Joseph was a true disciple. He just doesn't get counted with the twelve.

Matthew leaves Mary and Mary Magdalene watching from across the path. Tomorrow I'll post about the Roman guard. Today, the women are there with Jesus. The Marys aren't ready to give up their Jesus just yet. They know He has not been embalmed. His body was all torn from the whips and the beatings. They are probably still in shock. Only yesterday He was walking and talking. He probably even made them smile with a side joke while everyone was getting the dinner together. Just yesterday He was.... and now.... He's locked in a tomb.
