Burning Mouth Syndrome

But wait, there's more...
Spare the inevitable jokes ...

Anyone ever been diagnosed or know someone diagnosed with this? After having this burning sensation on the tip/top of my tongue off and on for about 2 weeks now, I decided to see if I could find something online related to it. Webmd has some articles on "burning mouth syndrome", which I'd never heard of before, but describes kinda what I have going on (it's like having just burned my tongue on a hot beverage) ... just on my tongue, though ... nowhere else in my mouth. No known causes for it that I could find except for diabetes and menopause (I think I can safely rule out both of them, as I just recently had a physical and checked out fine all around.)

Spicy and acidic foods trigger/intensify the pain, so I've been drinking a lot of ice water to try and "cool" it down. Will probably put a call in to my dentist and/or doctor by Wednesday if it persists, but thought I'd see if anyone has heard of this before.

I didn't burn my tongue on anything, that I can recall. But that's what it feels like, except it doesn't stop/go away (e.g., the next day).

I thought at first it might've been that my tongue was irritated due to too many of my "happy drinks" one night about 2 weeks ago (Happy Drink: Tequila, Midori, Sweet/Sour mix, Pineapple Juice, Lime Juice, Grenadine). I'd had quite a few of 'em with a girlfriend of mine that weekend, and thought maybe all the citrus was too tart on my tongue, but the burning sensation is still there tonight, though it's been off and on throughout the day since then.

BMS is an actual "syndrome" recognized by dentists/doctors; not just a temporary issue when you drink something hot.

I have something not quite exactly what you describe. A particular high dose of antibiotics left my tongue always feeling like it was burned on pizza or hot soup or something. Never went away after 10 years. It doesn't hurt or burn, it just feels like a few days later after a burn when it feels "fuzzy".

Did you eat something and continue to eat something you don't usually eat? I get this sensation after I eat something I am allergic too. Like pineapples or uncooked tomatoes. Could that be it?

That is described as one of the possible contributors (antibiotics) to BMS that I read about, though I haven't been on any. And the articles do say it can last for several years. If that's the case, I'm getting my tongue cut off because this crap is annoying as hell!

That's due to the high acid content. Bananas can do it too.

Like I said, I've had it for a good 10 years, never went away, never got used to it. I'm always aware of it.

I was on antibiotics for a few weeks this fall, and I lost all sensation of taste. Finally go that back....

I'm not aware of any food allergies that I have. Diet is pretty much normal. The only thing I can think of that changed recently are that I switched to Folgers coffee. I suppose it could be that it's a particularly higher-acidity to it than I'm used to, but not sure.

Mine didn't go away the next day either, lasted a few days. Is there any bumps?

When I did, they said there wasn't much that could be done for it. It either gets better or not. Mine, not. But mine was brought on with the drugs, yours wasn't so hopefully it's temporary in your case.

We found that Folgers Coffee triggers my migraines where as my regular Senseo did not. So you could be on to something.

I found diet soda triggers mine, stopped drinking diet soda and the migraines stopped.

Are you taking antibodics? If so, you might have thurst infection. A yogurt will cure that. You need to see a doctor about the burning tongue though.
