Burning the nerve for lower back pain

Jameo

What?!
My boyfriend has an effed up back. He has had a series of injections for pain which have done nothing for him. His doctor told him sinces the injections aren't working for him, he wants to burn a nerve in his lower back and see if that will help with the pain before they decide on surgery. I've never heard of this before. Anyone know anything about it?

What type of injections has he received? epidurals with steriods?

I am so very blessed
Have him call me. I have LOTS of experience with this......steroid injections, chiropractors, massage therapy, physical therapy, accupuncturists, multiple visits to orthopaedic doctors, and finally with a spine surgeon. He was my savior, literally!

He has had 2 maybe 3 different "cocktails" and they did nothing for pain.

If he's just seeing a ortho doc and they are doing "cocktails" in the area, chances are they won't help. I've known people that go up to a doc in Waldorf and actually have an epidural done where the steriods are injected directly where they need to be.

It sounds like badgirl is on to something with you, so I'll step away. Hope he feels better soon.

I've dealt with a bad back for years. The comments from myself and other people that have had epidurals is pretty much the same: They are usually given in 3 doses over a few weeks. 1st shot helps. 2nd shot doesn't do as much. 3rd is rarely felt.

Depending on what is wrong will depend on what treatment is required. If you have a protruding disk, therapy can help. If you have a stenosis, no amount of manipulation or drugs is going to help. And the only way to find out what is going on is to get an MRI with a dye injection.

I've had 3 laminectomy procedures done over the course of 25 years. I'm am doing fine today.

As far as burning a nerve... I'd be real leery of that. Once you burn or destroy a nerve, it's pretty much done forever. If he misses, or gets overly aggressive with the procedure, you may wind up with permanent feeling loss in the extremities or worse.

:yeahthat:

I'm dealing with back issues also. I go today to get 2 injections 1 in hip and 1 in L4 - L5 area. I had the same procedure done last year and the injection gave me great relief for a year...Burning a nerve, I know that they do that to horses (mostly race horses) with leg issues and they call it a nerve block. I don't think I would want to be on top of a 1000 lb animal going 30 mph and he not feel his feet under him. Yes it will probably kill your pain but I would be leary. I have some nerve damage in my hand from surgery and it isn't any fun when you can't feel what your touching or doing. My injections are done under xray and the doc hits me right where it needs to be. Good Luck....
