Buying a laptop

I have been thinking about getting myself a laptop. I don't know much about them, so I was hoping someone would have suggestions on brands and places to get one. I only plan on using it for my own personal use(email & internet). Thanks for all your help.

They're out to get us
if you're relatively inexperienced with computers and comfortable with windows, stick with that (aka don't get an apple).

Dell is pretty good, lets you customize, and usually has fair prices. Some people complain about them, but you have various people who will complain about all of them. It's the companies used the mosts that have the highest # of complaints, but they all break down equally (except apple, which breaks down 1% more often).

check out dell's website, they usually offer ideas on what you should get with your computer, depending on what you need. at the very least, it would be a good start.

I like Dell's - stay away from Compaq's. Toshiba, IBM and HP makes some good ones as well.

Notebook and Laptop Reviews is THE Internet place to go to compare and read about laptops - period.

How much are you looking to spend? Mousebaby has a SWEET laptop for sale, if I had $1500 (I think that is what she wants) to spend on a laptop I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Go to dell.com outlet and look at refurbs/turn-in's, you can get a REALLY great deal on one there.

Now for the important stuff;

  1. Memory, at least 2GB... 4GB is optimal
  2. Drive speed, 7200RPM, nothing less. 5600 will get you by, but you really need to strive for 7200...
  3. Stay away from on-board Video, make sure it has a separate video card.
  4. Drive size minimum 80GB... bigger is better
  5. Processor;
  • If you like Intel - Intel Dual Core minimum, strive for the Intel Duo Core 2 Pentium...
  • If you like AMD - Mobile AMD Sempron minimum, strive for the AMD TurionTM
