Baseball great Cal Ripken became a goodwill ambassador for the United States today, with the Bush administration hoping his trademark determination will boost America's image worldwide.
Ripken, who was first approached in 2002 by the Bush administration about having a public diplomacy role, said for him it was all about the sport. "Through baseball, through sport in general, you are usually received with open arms," he said. "This is not a political statement for me."
