clematis Question

I have a very large clematis outside that blooms purple flowers. I read last fall that I shouldn't trim it back until early spring after the last freeze. It's really an eye sore right now and was wondering if this is true. thanks for your help!

First, it's a clemantis not a caladium.

Second, there is not one method for pruning all clemantis. It all depends on the variety and which 'pruning group' it falls in:

Clematis Nursery - Clematis Pruning

If you don't know the exact variety you have, you need to know when it blooms so you can categorize it correctly. Using the wrong pruning method can seriously wreak havoc. For example, pruning one in the spring that blooms on two-year old wood will remove all of this year's blossoms.

Yes It's beautiful when it's blooming! But It's all brown and ugly right now and I have never had one before. I can't get a hold of the previous owners of the home so I didn't know what to do with it! And I definitely didn't want to kill it! The link Jazz gave me helped though.

They are beautiful! One of the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen!

Yes, they are. The pics I posted of my clematis are a few years old - they are much fuller now.

But these are still my favorite - stargazer lilies:

I love those too! I have a couple of those I planted last fall! Hopefully they will sprout up and and be just as beautiful. I just have to be patient with them!

Yes, it does take awhile to get established but once they do, they are profuse bloomers. I have about two dozen of them planted in the beds running the length of my front porch and it's absolutely incredible when they all start blooming.
