Calvert: Dog adoption--which shelter?

I am having a home built and would like to adopt a dog upon its completion January/February of 2009. Do any of you have reviews of or experiences with the local shelters? I have looked online at dogs at the local animal welfare league, the humane society, and the animal shelter.

Also, can you recommend a date when I should actually start visiting the dogs? I don't know how long the adoption process takes and I know I will be picky so that I can find a dog the best suits me (and me suit the dog). Thanks!

I adpoted from Calvert County Humane Society in March and the whole process took about a week. I know people that have adopted from Charles County Humane Society and have had no issues with them.

Second Hope Rescue is also great.

Its hard to tell you a date to start looking because you may see a dog that you absolutely love in December more than likely will not be at either the shelter or the Charles County Humane Society come January. Any kill shelter does not hold animals for long. If you go through Calvert County Humane Society(a no kill shelter) or a Rescue and you find a dog that you love and connect with they may be able to work with you with your time frame.

Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder has many animals needing homes and are all rescue, shelter or humane society animals.

Good luck finding your new best friend. :huggy:

The last one we adopted was from tri county took about 10 days I have also used the one over in Calvert.
I do have one better. My son and his girlfriend cannot take their dog with them to a new place she is a jack russell mix spaded and the sweetest thing house broke and crate trained (or at least she is in a pen) they are very upset do not want to take her to the pound for fear she will be put to sleep. I would be happy to pass on a number and let you talk to them adoption costs $150+ this one is up to date on all shots etc and you could have her just to put her in a good home

Thanks I hate to see the kids loose her but there is no way I can take her and taking her to the pound is not an option for them. I think she is under 20 lbs or so. Calvert Count Animal Resue is who I got my big girl from a few years ago they are over by Comcast and they were great. Check the online site here they had some beautiful Mastiffs on there a few weeks ago.

Hey Jetmonkey, the reason they "snoop", if they do, is to make sure you are a responsible pet owner. By your comment, I can tell you are not. Hats off to SOMDbcrabs for wanting to adopt from a shelter. Good for you :)

I agree! what a dumb*ss comment about snooping. I used to volunteer for the Calvert County Humane Society, and some moron actually wanted to adopt the puppy I was fostering w/out her being spaded, so "she could have lots of puppies". Its that thinking that gets some of them homeless. But I also had to give up my dog, and I was so grateful that the Calvert County Humane Society "snooped" as jetmonkey so stupidly put it before placing her in a home. It made me feel good that they care enough about the welfare of the dogs to do that. I second hats off to SOMDcrabs for wanting to adopt from a shelter.

The correct term is spay, and past tense is spayed.

I have adopted from tri county with no problems. There are so many that needs homes, it is hard to choose. Took about 1 week but that was because I picked a puppy and had to wait to have her spayed first. Have also adopted from Animal Relief Fund with no problems either.

Why not wait until you are settled in the new house then go looking for a dog? That way, you will have time to devote to it when you bring it home.

I am going to wait till after the home is built and we are settled. But I cant help looking at all the dogs on various shelter websites. :) Also, I am getting an early jump on looking because I want an adult dog rather than a puppy. My assumption is I should be very thorough with my search since I'll be getting a dog with some irreversible traits.

Haha, I'm more excited about getting a dog than I am having a home built! :blushing: I haven't had a dog since my childhood dog passed away about 10 years ago.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

I volunteer with Second Hope and I have three large dogs, two aren't online yet. One is a purebred choc lab, other is black and white labXpointer and third is a AB/pitt mix, Nyla (on the site, so is her baby Wendi and other puppy is Brie). Check out their website. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/secondhoperescue.html:howdy:

Thanks for looking for adoption.

While I applaud you for wanting to go through a shelter to do an adoption after your home is built, don't rule out taking an owner give-up. I'm sure that most rescues get more give up calls than they can handle and if private shelters are full, sometimes the only option the owner feels is left is Tri-County.

If there is no or a low fee for the owner give up, why not make a donation to a shelter instead if you choose that dog?
