No, why? They had a paper last Wednesday (1/5) although it was late due to a printing issue.

If you didn't get one between Christmas and New Years's that's normal, they take a vacation week then every year.

Received one last week as well. Haven't heard any rumors about them shutting down.

they did what...?? SHUT DOWN??
I am also assuming they did. I did not get a paper yesterday. None of the County Govt. offices got papers yesterday. I went by this morning...a sign on the window only indicating operating hours. I called, got voice mail, left message, with guess what...no return call!

Well,they did....

Look at the money. Who owned the Calvert Independent versus who owns the Calvert Recorder.

Sad to say, a lot of print newspapers that haven't found alternate income sources using the internet, blogs, et al, are dying all across America.

Damn shame! 70 yrs of Calvert County history down the drain. Charlie Mister spent his life there and did a great job holding that paper together. A great crew working there.

Calvert is now down to one twice weekly newspaper run by a corporation from out of town. They change the crew there as often as the tide changes. Several years ago the radio station was sold and became an all sports station now owned by Daniel Snyder. The only connection that it has to Calvert is that the antenna is still there.

Where is the Economic Development team in Calvert? Time for them to get off their butts and get some heavy hitters to but in on the Calvert Independent. The county needs competition in the newspaper business.

You cannot force a business to exist and be economically viable. Are you suggesting using public funds to subsidize a newspaper? Or suggesting that private funds keep it afloat as a 'charity'?

The writing has been on the wall for print media for some years now; papers are closing all over the country. It's often sad..but its also inevitable.

I'm suggesting that Calvert County Economic Development do what they are supposed to do and that is go find investors who will help get a 70 year old institution in Calvert County up on its feet and viable again. Is that "charity" as you suggest? Is that using "public funds to subsidize"?

There is nothing worse than a one newspaper town. Its doubly worse when that one newspaper doesn't have any interest in the community other than what profit it can send back to the corporate owners.

The Independent was own by the Washington Times and was running under bankruptcy protection for many years. Not sure if the ownership was still in place at the time of its demise but they were running at a loss when I worked there over 10 years ago. I'm surprised they made it this long.

uh..news flash for you: No newspaper exists in pretty much the entire country unless it, first and foremost, turns a profit for whoever owns it.

Simple fact of life, that....

I think your intention is good, but I also think it would be futile for E.D. to look for investors for a failing enterprise. The bottom line is that newspapers across the country are failing because people are reading them less, and this local market apparently has room for only one profitable local newspaper to survive.

Agree with you on E.D. not getting involved in looking for investors in a failed newspaper. They are probably to busy trying to find investors in a failed business park, and golf course, not to mention the funds that they found to put into the PF farmers market that went out of business.

Week old news.

Would suspect demise is eminent.

I think this new paper "Southern Maryland Today" is full
of news and seems to be up to date as well....
Personally : better then both Calvert local papers, but sad about the
independent.

The Mckay's own the County Times. The County Times is a free paper distributed in St Mary's County. Not a big fan of the McKay's but their free paper is a better read than The Southern MD Today which is owned by Terry Clarke and costs $1.00. The So Md Today's paid circulation is so bad they have been throwing them in peoples drive ways for free so they can keep their circulation numbers up.

I Think that the paper is great...Southern Maryland Today blows County Times away when it comes to news and it also gives info on all of the tri-county area.I purchased a subscrition for SMT and the people were very professional. MY CHOICE for sure.... :coffee:

True that. I actually worked there in the late 80's and Charlie is a hell of a guy. I'm sure the staff changed a great deal since I was there, but there was a bunch of good guys there when I was, and I enjoyed being part of the team.
