Camera Lens?

Yes, that lens will work with the D40. Any DX style lens will work with that camera. AF-S lenses will work, but will not Auto focus, and older non AF-S lenses will not auto focus or meter correctly with the D40, D40X, and the D60.

The only thing with the lens you listed is, it will be more difficult to get pictures in lower light setting. This is do to the lens aperture only going down to F 4.

LusbyMom, As Tomcat mentioned, you can turn the ISO up to get pictures in lower light settings, but that does add noise to the images. That lens is an F4-5.6, that means at 55mm its max open aperture will be F4, and at 200mm it will be F 5.6. The VR turned on will help with camera shake, but the lower you can go on aperture the better. Like said above, go with the best you can afford. THey have a nikon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 but I think it would be pretty close the same aperture at 55mm as the other lens though.

Hope this help a little.

As for taking the pictures, that would cost you.

Lusby Mom--You'll be very happy with the lens you picked out.
What jbr13 means is the lower the f/ number the clearer the glass, and the more the lens costs.
When you and I get to that level we will buy the more expensive lenses.
But until then .....
