Hubby just ordered a Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Lens, and a 70-300 Lens for me. I don't plan on becoming a great photographer, but I think this will capture what I need. Early birthday present, so I'll have it during vacation, which will be on my birthday.

We're taking the auto train to Orlando, driving over to Daytona to visit family for half the vacation, then back to Orlando for a few days before climbing back on the auto train.

Thanks, belvak. Birthday isn't 'til June. It's a very early gift, and I told hubby that this is my year to choose the vacation. Daytona is pretty boring, for the most part, but I'll enjoy having a laid back vacation.

I've only been on a train once, and LOVED it. We also got a sleeping cabin, since it's an over night trip.

I think my train trips were on the commuter train in California.

You should have plenty of opportunities for some great shots!! Believe me, once you get started, it sort of becomes addictive!!! I don't have a SLR, just a NIKON Coolpix P90, and I ended up buying an external hard drive just to hold all the pics!!!

Commuter trains are nothing like riding Amtrak. Meals, cocktails, comfort. I've been saying for years I'd like to take a trip on Western Maryand RR. Maybe I'll make it this fall.

I just remembered a train trip in Mexico from Manzanillo to Guadalajara when I was 12. Nasty, nasty train trip. Animals on board and the bathroom opened directly over the tracks. NEVER AGAIN!!!

IF you can, try to get the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 lens too.

Inside the train this lens will allow you to take pictures of the people or interior of the train without the flash.. makes for less irritable "subjects".

Just an idea.

Then have fun and take LOTS of pictures!!

I don't think I'll be taking pics of people on the train. That's just rude. I'll probably be shooting out the window more than inside the train.

mAlice my grandparents got a sleeper cabin once when they came from florida to the lortin trainstation they said it was very ucomfortable and not much space to move and they didn't get much sleep as it was very loud. the last few times they came they just slept in there assigned seats the best they could as it costed extra to get a sleeper and they say its not worth it. I would love to hear your experience with the sleeper cabin when you go.
