I'm assuming yes ...this my problem. I put a cd in the tray push it in and the green light flashs and nothing comes up on my screen. I've tried different cd"s.Could it be the driver or something I need to install to make it work?
If it is the driver are they expensive? ...hard to install?
Any help is appreciated . Thanks

They are not expensive and definitely not hard to replace (in desktop system). If you are replacing, you might want to upgrade to a DVD read/write unit. Also, not that expensive and will fit in the same tray as the CD unit that is not working.

Try reinstalling the drivers first.

Try looking up the cd drive in the Devise Manager and see if it is listed, if not try unplugging the cables in the back then plugging them back in. In Devise manager if it has a yellow mark over unknown devise it needs a new driver. if it says devise is working properly but it doesn't sh#@ can it and get a new one.

When you say "nothing comes up on the screen". Are you talking about the AutoPlay feature or have you checked Windows Explorer to look at the drive letter?

I did have a yellow question mark at the unknown devise, clicked to repair it and still no luck. Also unplugged the cables and plugged them back. So I will replace CD driver. But if you don"t mind a couple more questions....Where to go to buy this ? I have a Dell pc 3000 series. And what do I remove to get into the CD area. I have no clue about that stuff... so don"t laugh. Any thing you can add will be helpful.
Thanks.... everyones advise was appreciated.

A new cd rom seems to be in order. They are super cheap.

You can buy one at Best buy, walmart, etc that sells computer hardware. I bought one from walmart several years ago and it still going strong. you can replace it with any make or model internal cd drive. TURN POWER OFF, remove side panels from tower, unplug cables, find and remove screws holding in drive and remove (should be two on both sides) slide drive out. reverse order to install. Hints Long #1 phillips tip scewdriver is needed, if it gives you driver problems pop the bundled software in and follow directions or go to internet and find the driver

Still doesn't make sense to replace a CD drive with another CD drive when a DVD RW unit would offer more options and a lot more burn storage capacity for backing up and storing videos, music and whatever else.

Chances are they would end up with one of those anyway as the last time I had to purchase one you couldn't get just a cd rom.
