Growing up I remember hearing a story about someone that lived over a few blocks away. The person passed away. There was claims that their dog howled the entire night prior to it's owner, what we called then the dog's master, passing away. Others chimed in that they had heard it happening other times.
An internet search reveals a few articles on the subject but no clear conclusion. I know that when bad weather is approaching, Apollo starts to get all antsy and searches for a place to hide. Perhaps there is a change in the barometric pressure that he can sense that we can't. Anyway I'm not sure how a dog would sense death but many people claim they do.
