She called the local hospital and asked to speak to the doctor on call. When they wouldn't tell her who it was, she gave up.
Reykdal called a friend who is a nurse, who urged her to immediately go for the rabies vaccine. She was told there was some in Eriksdale, Man. She and her husband — who've just struggled through a hellish summer on their flooded farm — drove more than an hour away through flood-zone detours.
The hospital staff took her information and said they had to get approval from Winnipeg before she could be treated. She said they waited three hours, gave up at 11:30 p.m. and went home.
