In trying to answer some of the questions I had concerning Daisy's recent passing, I had to educate myself. In no time flat, I found out what Daisy had, and how I and the numerous veterinary doctors missed the signs that have been there for years.
www.caninecancerawareness.org The site is dedicated to the education, detection, treatment and monetary help necessary for those dealing with the various canine cancers. The site lists trial treatments that are underway and keeps track of their progress and findings.
I was floored when I read through the site and found how prevalent this disease is in dogs, and how uneducated most veterinary clinics are of it. It is very clear that as pet owners, it is up to us to educate ourselves and ask for specific tests if these diseases are suspected.
There are numerous pictures and stories as well, from folks about their pets that are either fighting or lost the battle. Their stories are both heart wrenching and informative. I was shocked to see that what I went through with my dog, is nothing compared to what some of these folks go through. Not that I thought that what I experienced was the worse that there can be, rather I simply had no idea that this disease affects our pets in similar ways that it affects our family via human cancers.
The site is maintained purely by donation and by non-veterinarians, but the information comes directly from veterinarians.
Give it a look. Spread the word. Every little bit of info helps.
