Which rebel are you considering? I am not a Canon guy, but I looked at getting a canon when I got my SLR. If you are comparing the 20D to Rebel or Rebel XT, I think the 20D is better. I believe the XTI and XSI are better Rebel lines that the 20D. The 20D was the next step up from the original Digital Rebel, which has moved up to the 30D and now the 40D.
Nikon wise, I like the new D90 coming out for $999.95. It should be shipping by early Oct.
