The issue is my power steering, it started with a moaning pump and no power assist at low speed. Changed the pump and all was fine for about a week, then the power side hose let loose and lost the steering again. Changed power side and return side hoses but still no power, figured running the pump dry may have killed it, but changing it didn't help. I don't want to have to change the rack, but can't think of anything else, anyone got any other thoughts. BTW its a 2000 Pontiac.

Whose doing the work? I suspect that either the first pump failed in such a way as to contaminate the whole system, and they didnt flush the system when changing the pump. Failing to flush the system can lead to downstream failures. Or the system wasn't properly bled to remove air bubbles after the changes.

Good pumps are hard to find. If you are using cheap, Chinese reman pumps, it's not uncommon to go thru 3-4 before finding a good one.

Bite the bullet and pay for a quality pump and new lines with new teflon O-rings. The Teflon O-rings on steering lines are one-time use only. Once they're crushed from the initial tightening, they can't be used again. Bleed the system properly when installing the new pump. Bleeding procedures are on You Tube.

Your rack is probably OK if it's not making a clicking sound when turning. Finding good racks is the same as finding good pumps. You have to pay $1000 for a factory one or else you'll be changing it again.

Might want to change the windshield fluid as well. Just to be safe.

Trust me, I know what I am talking about. :coffee:

Thats right, she's been through the SOMDForums Master Tech classes, including the tough one "What is blinker fluid, and how do I check if it's low?" and the popular "If it's making noise, where do I trade it in for a new car?" And "Mysteries of the Instrument Panel: How can I tell what side my fuel filler is on without looking outside the car?"
