Before autonomous smart cars hit the roads, we're going to be seeing regular cars upgraded with the smarter technologies that will eventually make self-driving vehicles possible. In the UK Ford is introducing what it calls Intelligent Speed Limiter technology on its new S-MAX that enhances the vehicle's cruise control capabilities with cameras that are able to recognize posted speed limits.

Similar link was posted either yesterday or day before. I'm a Ford guy, but if Ford brings that here, I may have to reconsider.

I won't be buying any car that that includes that technology any time soon. The whole concept of "self driving" cars will be a long time coming into practice. The technology is not far off -- but the societal and legal issues to be worked out will be enormous. For instance, if the car drives itself - whose responsible when it fails and collides with another? Today's laws are based on a hundred plus years of vehicle usage in the public sector. Introduction of self driving vehicles will require significant changes to virtually all of the laws on the books today.
