I am exhausted! My brother asked if I could watch his mini dachshund while they drive/move out here from WA state. He flew the dog, Scooter, out to me last month. I got stuck with the ex’s cat who is not a fan of dogs at all. Scooter is cat friendly. I have the cat on the bedroom side of the house with his food and litter. Scooter has the rest of the house with a doogie door to the fenced backyard. They are separated by a child gate. The problem is Scooter is a needy little bugger and will not sleep alone- I have been sleeping on the couch since June 29th because he will whine/chew at the gate all night if I try to go to my bed. The cat seems to be more comfortable with Scooter (maybe because he’s bigger?) in the house compared to when my dogs were alive but if I carry him toward the gate while Scooter is there he’ll jump out of my arms and hide under the bed. I feel bad for the cat because he is by himself most of the time and now he is being needy when I go to his side of the house! What can be a next step to get these 2 to coexist without the gate so I can get some sleep?

My brother, wife and kids won’t get here until Aug 6th. Then they will be living in my basement apartment until they find their own place.

I REALLY need some sleep. :(

I have a new dog and she wants to chase my cat everywhere. I let her. Eventually the novelty will wear off.

MAYBE NOT.... Its been almost a year and my new dogs still chases the cats .... :jameo:

she will sit up all night and stare at them...

on your side... it might wear off as she is not a working dog with a high prey drive. :yay:

After 10 years together, my boxer will still go after the cat, but not often. I just look at him and say "Leave your brother alone!"

Poor you! How nice that you are caring for your Brother's Dog Scooter. Let Scooter sleep with you, and you might get some sleep. He probably sleeps in your Brother's bed, so that's why he cries, and keeps you up at night! He just wants some snuggle time, and he misses your Brother. Good luck.

My cat used to come out of nowhere when Cody would fall asleep.. She would attack his head and start chewing on his ears. It turned out to be a game... The dog would shake her off and then they kinda played a mixture of tag and hide-n-seek for a while... It was quite funny to watch most nights...

When I brought my dads dog Sara home after he passed away, the cat out right attacked her every chance she got. Dads dog would not stick up for herself even though she outweighed the cat by 100 lbs or more..

Hubby and I had to intervene for a while but they finally found a middle ground. That took a couple weeks.
