Cat shots

So I stop by Tractor supply to pick up yearly shots for the cats. They got this new thing, you no longer inject it, it says to mix the two bottles like always then this is where it gets weird. It says to put 1 drop in the corner of each eye and the rest goes up the nose. Im not feelinf too comfortable with this. may take it to a vet and let them do it. Anyone have any experience with this new style shot. Any input will help, I hope.

Wait, you inject your own cats with supplies from a tractor store?

Please tell me there is a reason NOT to be concerned about this.

Feed stores sell vaccines and they're fine. And it's normal to some people to "inject their own cats". It's a simple vaccine.

Huh. You don't need some sort of license to get these needles? Also seems counter productive to me. How could you get documents that verify the vaccine has been administered? You could run into problems that way in regards to insurance and treatment.

Just looked it up, sorry I've been of no help in the thread. Just things I'm unfamiliar with. I think I'd have a hard time putting something up my cat's nose as well.

You have insurance on your cat?

No, you don't need a license. Only rabies has to be given by a licensed vet. You can buy needles and syringes anywhere (well, any store that sells them ). My vet asks me to bring in the part of the box of the vaccine that has all the information they need to update the animals' records.

It's not hard at all, and it saves a ton of money when you have multiple animals. Dogs and cats are one thing, but I hardly ever need to call the vet for livestock. Dogs and cats still get regular check-ups. But they get their rabies from rabies clinics always.

Both of them. Very affordable, and great coverage. Like, $25 a quarter per cat. Comes out to $200 a year. Covers dental, emergencies, illness, injury, et cetera up to about $10k a year.

EDIT: I'm really not sure about the cap anymore, it's been a while, I'd have to check. I know it's somewhere in the realm of 5-15k. In any case, I think it's worth it.

Wow. Even for pets needles should be regulated better. Don't need to give junkies more routes to pricking kids with their HIV needles in Nicolet Park.

C'mon lucky...they're needles. :lmao: I wonder what all the livestock folks would do if they regulated needle sales. :cds:

So I guess none of you have tried the new vaccine, its called feline focus 3. Ive given all my pets their own shots for years. Its alot cheaper and with 5 cats, I need it cheaper. All they are is a yearly booster. Its the eye thing that bothers me.

They'd be just fine. I don't mean a set number for anyone, anywhere, under any circumstances. You know, more livestock; more needles.

Honestly I figured to get a hold of needles you would need a prescription at a regular pharmacy, or some sort of documentation or license in a livestock type situation that states how many could be sold to you.

At least the prescription at the pharmacy part is correct, right?

No, I haven't tried it. Sorry.

Have you not tried eye drops before though? I find it easiest to drop from the outside corner. You have to hold the head still and peel open the eye, but it's not too difficult. If you're worried about poking your cat's eye - don't. They'll only turn their head away. Heck, it's kinda hard to peel their eyes open if you don't get it done and over with quickly.

No clue on the nose part... I'd be afraid to choke them. Went to a site that had instructions on it, and said to drop it in their nose as they inhale. Ack! No thanks.

It seems to me if they blow it back out of their nose, which they will try to do even if you do get it in on an inhale, then you can't be sure how much of the vaccine they actually got. Same with if you miss hitting their eye. If something like that happens do you dose again? Or do you leave as is and your pet is potentially under vaccinated?

Yea, but to put a vaccine in the eye is what bothers me. I mean I guess its ok if they say so but Im still not comfortable with it. I hate to say it, but the needle vacinnes seem to be easier. I had no trouble sticking them with a needle. It was over with in a couple seconds.

I'm guessing it immediately absorbs through the mucous membranes, but yeah, if there's a reaction with the eye it won't be pretty and the potential for permanent blindness increases dramatically (or so I would guess).

I used to vaccinate my cats myself. At least with the shot you know you got it, done and over with ... quick, nice and tidy.

If you do it, let us know how it goes.

Cats do not need yearly booster shots. In fact, it is not good for them.
