Cats and Renal Disease

Hello-

I'm new to the forum.

I took my cat to the emergency vet y-day b/c she was hiding for two days and not wanting to eat. She was also slumping over the waterbowl. Anyway, she was diagnosed with uncompensated renal disease. I've done a lot of researching on the internet on the topic on the causes.

My question is whether or not this disease could be caused by a recent consumption of poison. Reading on the net I saw that toxicity is a cause of the disease, but thought the vet said it takes a while (maybe a couple of years) for renal disease to develop from toxicity. I'm trying to figure out if someone poisoned my pet, and if so, when it took place (I'm suspecting a recent poison). Btw my cat is a strictly indoor pet and just turned seven this yr. I thought she was too young to develop this disease. She is otherwise healthy the vet said. :(

If your cat is strictly indoors, do you think someone in your household poisoned her? Or did she get into a cupboard or something on her own?
I hope she is oK.

I've got an appointment with her normal vet today to find out the cause/treatments.

She gets into a lot of things (mostly twinkies in cupboards and bread) lol!

Hubby has bad habits of leaving chemicals out, which is really ignorant. It could have been an "ignorant" accidental poisoning.

However, I talked to another vet today and she said that the RD was probably inherited from one of her parents and not a poisoning.

That seems more likely. Kidney problems in cats is fairly common. I'd wait to see what her regular vet has to say and perhaps you can control it with a better diet (like we talked about the other day) and meds, etc.

I went to the vet. I'm to give Callie SQ fluids every day for the rest of her life, but thats ok b/c I'm dedicated. She also discussed a low protein diet once she gets better. I also have to give her antibiotics.
