CCNP Certification

I'm sure this subject has been discussed before, but... My CCNA is coming due to expire in about 6 months and I'm preparing for my CCNP and want some really good testing/study material beyond the dry CiscoPress books.

I've read about the illegal test engines (testking, pass4sure, etc...). So I'm staying away from those. I'm a really poor test-taker and need lots of aides to get me through this stuff. I've heard Transcender is a really good prep tool. I didn't really want to spend $120 per volume, but if that will help me through this I am willing to do that.

So, what recommendations do you geeks have? Something with good Q&As and lab questions. I do have a small home lab but it lacks a firewall. And the ISCW (which I'm currently studying) has quite a bit of firewall stuff in it.

TIA...

I used a Sybex "CCNP Complete" book that came with a testing engine, sample questions and some flashcards that worked on your computer that helped. that was for the 642-801 to 831 tests tho. not sure what they are testing with now.

Depends on your goal. Do you want to learn Cisco CCNP or do you want to pass the test? They are not necessarily the same thing.

If you want to learn CCNP, see if you can get ahold of Cisco's packet tracer application, its a very in depth simulator. With it you can setup a simulated network, import your exisiting configs, and modify at will without affecting/effecting your existing infrastructure. Want to add a cisco device, you can do that too.

If you want to pass the tests then pay to get the updated braindumps, testkings, pass4sure test keys. Cisco tests are notorious for updating every 3 months (or so) any printed test guide can give you test samples that will match the tone of the test questions, but they questions/answers will be out of date. The braindump sites are, generally, the latest versions of the questions seen on the tests. The bigger ones, utilize professional testers to take the tests, get the actual questions and answers and then update their own products to reflect the new information.

Nuck… As I mentioned I wanted to avoid the braindumps. Technically they are cheating and illegal. From what I understand with braindumps is the y provide the questions verbatim. It’s not worth it to me to get caught and have my career screwed for it.

I feel my experience level sits at around the CCNP level. So, regardless of how I pass the test I don’t think I would be seen as a paper tiger. But I do not want to just pass the test for the sake of passing it either. I do want to come away with some comprehensive knowledge of the material. But you and I both know that once you take these tests, over time you forget the material and have to go through the study process all over again to recert.

Buying book, after book, after book and flash cards and dozens of test engines can get really expensive. Taking the off-site courses tend to result in nothing more than what I would get from self-study and they too are expensive. I’m considering Transcender. But I wanted to find out what folks already certified used to help them pass the test.

Thats why i questioned about your desired end result, passing the test or gaingin the knowledge. While the braindumps maybe technically unethical, ou wont be screwed or caught for using them. FYI any of the BootCamp schools are no different, the instructors take the tests multiple times so they have material to teach in the course. They dont advertise it, but how do you think they are able to hold a 90% first time passrate for a majority of the technical certification classes?

I typically self study and test, my certs apply to my current level of knowledge and experience (i'm a CCNP because i work that role). But i have used boot camps when Company money will pay for it. Transcenders are good for getting you into the test mindset, and so that you will be exposed to the type of language used for the tests.
