I've always used iTunes - even before I started liking and using Apple devices - to rip CD music to compressed formats, load it on mp3 players, and burn CDs. The interface is very simple and easy to use, but at the same time greater functionality is just a couple clicks away if someone wants to use it.
I stick a CD in the drive and it automatically queries Gracenote to get the album information (e.g. cover art, track names), downloads the songs, converts the wave files into whatever format I've previously designated, and ejects the CD to let me know it's done and ready for the next one. I have thousands of CDs, so getting them all into my digital library would otherwise be a bit of a chore.
