(North East, MD) On Friday, June 7, 2019 just after 9:00 PM the Maryland State Police’s North East Barrack conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Westbound Pulaski Highway east of Mechanics Valley Road, in North East. Eleven Troopers participated in this State Highway Administration’s grant funded operation. With the assistance of SHA, the checkpoint ran shy of two hours long, and had a total of 533 vehicles pass through. Of those 533 vehicles, three individuals were directed to the side of the road for further testing. Along with simultaneous grant funded DUI Saturation Patrols; four DUI arrests, one CDS arrest and one warrant arrest occurred Friday night.
The effect of DUI checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols is a proven resource in reducing the number killed and injured in alcohol or drug related crashes. Crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when publicized DUI checkpoints like this one and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. Checkpoints like this are placed in locations based on crash statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence.
