Cellular Data Cards for Internet

EVDO Forums - EV-DO Discussion, Support, Coverage, Compatibility, Tips, Verizon, Sprint, KR1, WRT54G3G-ST, Cradlepoint CTR350, PHS300 : EVDOforums.com

Everything you want to know about EVDO, cellular routers, cell phones, etc. In the Kyocera forum, many have come across the KR1 lockup problem, turns out to be a conflict between the external cell card and the internal 802.11 receiver/transmitter. Turning off the WiFi almost always resolves the lockups, but little bugs still persist. My theory is that is there is a weak cell signal, the wireless card needs to increase it's output and eventually overdrives the WiFi. If you have a really strong cell signal (-75dBm or better), the incidents of lockup are WAY reduced. The KR2 is supposed to be released soon. Haven't had an opportunity to play with the Top Global. Looking to play a bit with the CradlePoint.

I have the Sprint Merlin S720 - it blows the doors off of mostly everything I have played with...

My phones are with Verizon, but since Verizon caps there service at 5GB and will cancel your contract for exceeding it one too many times, I went with Sprint. I have physically tested BOTH Verizon and Sprint EVDO Rev-A and Sprint is quicker.

I have used the KR1, but have gone through 3 of them... constant lockups (one to three times a week) on the WLAN side. I thought it was DHCP and/or security... but eventually I found that WPA-PSK kept locking everything up, at least it seemed like it did...

I finally got ticked off enough and bought the Tob Global 3G Phoebus MB6000 :yay:

It is a bit more than the KR-1, but worth every penny... I have had it for 3 months and have had zero lockups! Much better setup screen and looks kewl on top of my desk upstairs!!!

Fortunately, I have DSL at the house and only need to use these for our poor contractors on base where we can't install a corporate WAN. Good to know you've had good luck with the TopGlobal. Verizon has a much stronger signal across the base, so we are using the KPC-650. Agreed, a bit slower than Sprint, but it's what our corporate offices authorize. And because we have such a huge user base with Verizon, we don't get bumped at 5Gb.\

Thanx for the inputs.

Here is another tip - I have yet to get VPN to work through a KR1, even though it is supported... man, that really ticked me off after I got it!!!

It works seamlessly with the Phoebus 3G :yahoo:

TopGlobal also makes a higher-end EVDO router, but it is a bit more pricey - more for corporate applications.

VPN is a bit sluggish through the Rev A, but is still doable.

I got our VPN to work. Cisco client. Changed the protocol in the VPN from TCP to UDP (or vs versa ??) and it works fine, but the VPN host on the other side has to be configured to use the alternate protocol. Ours is. VPN is sluggish no matter what because of the overhead and handshaking. Even worse as the data rates get slower and the network is busy doing re-transmits and NAKs.

Also have had no problems using the Nortel VPN client.
