Nicole Duncan, who serves as CEO and Managing Director of CR Commercial Property Group in Sydney, Australia, called in to a commercial radio station on Monday saying long commutes were no excuse for staying home and working remotely.

“This generation is just selfish,” Duncan told the 2GB Mornings program, according to news.com.au.

The no-nonsense boss, who describes herself as “passionate about people returning to work,” said she spent years schlepping to the office on public transport and believes millennials and Gen Z workers should do the same.

“In our younger days we caught trains, buses, ferries to get to work,” Duncan, who did not disclose her age, declared. “Yes it did take two or three hours, but you’ve got to be in the office.”

The CEO said the failure of white-collar workers to come back to the office had been disastrous for Sydney’s metro area, although she didn’t provide stats that proved it was just young workers who were reluctant to return.

“Hotels are suffering … there’s less business travel, they do it all on (Microsoft) Teams … cleaners, people who make your coffee, lunches, all of those sorts of things,” she stated.

Okay, well, who created a fake pandemic and shut everything down, forcing people to work remotely? Who pushes the promise of guaranteed income (paid by people who DO go into work)? Who created a pop culture of entitlement and zero responsibility? Who told these kids that everything they don't like is violence?

And yes I know it's Australia but they are just as bad if not worse than the US in ruining their culture and young people. And you know the conservatives reading that are like, "Yeah, punk, get off yer ass and get to work," while the liberals are all, "OMG that is SOOOO mean! Joshie and Hannah will need free therapy after reading that hate speech! This woman needs to be fired, maybe even jailed!"

What she really means to say the that she can't further grift those that used to commute to work to further her financial position, and she's pissed about it, becasue of so much empty commercial real estate she manages.

Remote work is a (mostly) failed experiment. When stocks were still on the rise during the shutdown people working from home were quick to say "hey look, economy is doing great so that means remote work is good!". Once the economy turned, they dropped that argument.

Some people can be more productive. Mainly introverts. Which is why some industries do okay with remote work (like Software development). Coincidentally those same industries do pretty well with outsourced work. If you can do your job from a different city, someone else can do it from a different state or a different country.

But even short term "good" remote/telework can be detrimental long term. It's harder to transfer knowledge to the next generation, harder to have productive meetings (as opposed to the meetings that should have been an e-mail, which is what every teams meeting basically is), harder to collaborate.

Those "distractions" that keep the introverts from their maximum productivity are often beneficial overall. When you coworker pesters you about how to use XYZ system, something they wouldn't put in an embarrasing e-mail but will ask directly, they learn. They become more effective even if it interrupts your momentum.

Yes, working from home is nice. No commute and no one looking over your shoulder means you can goof off a bit each day and still get the same amount of work done. But that also means someone else can goof off a lot and not get caught right away. And it's a slippery slope, maybe you took a few extra breaks and had a nice breakfast and extended lunch in the beginning. After 3 years you are going grocery shopping at 10am because you don't have any google meets or teams meeting scheduled and then you get your nails done at 2pm because that's the only time they could see you today and you can always just check your e-mails real quick at 7pm and see if you missed anything important.

Pretty soon what was temporarily an okay situation (or possibly even beneficial) has become an obvious drag and every person in any management capacity can see it but the employees just say "that boomer just wants an ass in a seat so he can micromanage and justify his $3/hr more than I make".
