Chad Holds French Citizens rescuing 103 Darfur Children

"PARIS, Oct. 26 — The president of Chad had a warning Friday for nine French citizens associated with a charity who had been arrested for trying to fly 103 children from Darfur to France, saying they faced punishment for their “horrible act.”

The Chadian police arrested the French citizens on Thursday, but a leader of the charity said that relocating the children was a humanitarian effort undertaken to “save them from death.”

The Chadian president, Idriss Déby, told reporters: “It is a horrible act which I say is a crime. I strongly condemn it.” He spoke during a visit to a social center in Abéché, Chad, where the children are being cared for, Reuters reported."

"ABECHE, Chad: Europeans offered candy to entice children in Chad to leave their homes, the children said, as the Chadian government investigated an operation to ship out young children to live with families in Europe.

Aid workers caring for the children in Chad's eastern city of Abeche, where authorities detained nine French citizens Thursday as they prepared to fly 103 children to France, said the children's accounts had not yet been verified."

Charity faces kidnap charge in Chad

"Nine French nationals are to be charged by Chadian authorities with abducting children and fraud, according to a public prosecutor.

Six French aid workers, three journalists, and the seven members of a Spanish flight crew were arrested on Thursday as they prepared to fly 103 children from the city of Abeche to Paris.

The seven Spaniards are to be charged as accessories Ahmat Daoud said on Monday.

But Unicef said after interviewing the children - 88 boys and 22 girls, all in good health - that most appear to be Chadian, not Darfuri, and that there was no evidence they were orphans."
