Charles County to Open Emergency Shelter for Those Without Power
WALDORF, MD * (Wednesday, February 14, 2007) -- The Charles County Commissioners announce that an emergency shelter will open at 6 p.m. this evening and close at 7 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2007, at Thomas Stone High School, 3785 Leonardtown Road (Route 5), to house Charles County citizens overnight who may be without heat or power.
The National Weather Service has predicted overnight temperatures in the area to dip below 20 degrees with wind chill factors to single digits.
SMECO (Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative) is reporting widespread power outages throughout the County, and is working diligently to restore power as quickly as possible.
If you come to the shelter, please turn off all utilities * water, gas, and electric * and close all doors and windows.
Please bring for your immediate overnight needs, a sleeping bag or bed roll, blankets and pillow, towels and wash cloths, toiletries and personal hygiene items, required medications, special dietary foods, doctor*s and pharmacy* name and phone number, and items such as books, puzzles, and/or games to pass the time.
Accommodations will be made to house pets that are brought to the shelter.
