A local United Way representative calls the most prominent and wealthy attorney in town.
“Sir,” he says, “our records indicate that you make more than a million dollars per year. Would you be willing to make a small donation?”
“Well,” the lawyer says indignantly, “do your records tell you that my mother is terminally ill and that her many medical expenses far exceed her annual income?”
“Um, no sir,” replies the rep.
“Or that my brother is a blind, wheelchair-bound Vietnam vet who has no income whatsoever?”
“I’m sorry, sir,” says the rep. “I didn’t know any of that.”
“Well,” says the attorney, “if I don’t give any money to them, why the hell should I give any to you?”
